SCULPTURAL SIMPLICITY WITH A QUIET DEPTH
The Shokunin Coffee Table is a luxury coffee table designed as a composition of form, material, and restraint. A statement coffee table that anchors the living room, it brings together sculptural design with exceptional craftsmanship.
At its centre, a substantial cylindrical form in richly figured burl walnut acts as the visual and structural core. The grain is dense and expressive, almost topographical in nature, creating depth and movement within the timber itself. This central element grounds the piece, offering a moment of quiet intensity within the overall composition.
Extending from this core are two contrasting volumes. One is finished in a modern straight-grain walnut veneer — clean, linear, and architectural. Its calm, ordered surface provides a deliberate contrast to the organic complexity of the burl. Concealed within, a seamlessly integrated drawer in burl walnut offers hidden storage, maintaining the purity of the form while adding practical function expected of a high-end designer coffee table.
The opposing section introduces a lighter, more expressive material palette. Wrapped in figured eucalyptus veneer, it is overlaid with an intricate brushed nickel vine pattern. Each line of metal is precisely inlaid, forming a delicate outline that traces across the surface. Finished in a soft matt, the nickel does not dominate. Instead, it interacts with its surroundings — catching the light subtly, shifting from a quiet sheen to a gentle shimmer as you move around the piece. It is this interplay between material and light that gives the table its depth.
Oversized at 170cm by 160cm, this large coffee table is designed for expansive interiors. Its generous scale allows it to function as a true living room centrepiece, anchoring seating arrangements while offering a broad, usable surface. Despite its size, the composition remains low, calm, and controlled — never overwhelming the space it sits within.
The dialogue between materials — burl walnut, straight-grain walnut, figured eucalyptus, and brushed nickel — creates a layered and balanced piece. Each transition is resolved with precision, each junction considered. The result is a bespoke coffee table that reveals more over time, rewarding closer inspection.
A modern coffee table defined not by excess, but by control. A piece of designer living room furniture that sits quietly, yet holds attention.
