Patience and Gough have been crafting indulgently beautiful bespoke furniture for over a decade. From the very beginning, restoring and upcycling furniture is what incited our passion for interiors and furniture design, and we still take on bespoke commissions for clients today.
We believe that much like how no two people are the same, no two spaces are the same. Our custom-made furniture is individual by design, shaped around each clients’ unique story, lifestyle and space.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what bespoke furniture is, the benefits over mass-produced furniture and provide a glimpse into our own furniture design process.

What is Bespoke Furniture?
Bespoke furniture is unique, one-of-a-kind furniture that is made to order. The term ‘bespoke’ simply means “made for a particular customer or user” and was historically used in the fashion industry where it referred to custom-made suits that were tailored to fit a specific individual.
Similarly, bespoke furniture is made to fit specific requirements including size, shape, style, materials and budget. Choosing tailor made furniture is a way to express individuality and creates a unique space that reflects your personal style and taste.
Another quality of custom furniture is that it is made to last. Unlike mass-produced furniture, it is created with exceptional attention to detail using high quality materials and craftmanship, meaning that it not only looks stunning but will also withstand the test of time.
Why Choose Bespoke Furniture?
The benefits of enlisting a dedicated furniture maker to produce unique pieces for your home or business are endless.
One of the most significant benefits is that it allows you to create a piece of furniture that’s precisely tailored to your specific space – a piece that truly reflects your personal style and taste. This ensures that your needs are met both in terms of usability and quality and also fulfils aesthetic requirements, offering a unique and luxurious feel.
Another benefit is that custom furniture is often more durable and long lasting when compared with mass-produced furniture. This is because furniture makers use high quality materials and production methods, meaning that it is as functional as it is beautiful.
Bespoke furniture is also more environmentally friendly than mass-produced furniture. Because it is made to order, there is no excess stock and less wasted material. Moreover, by choosing custom made furniture, you are supporting local craftmanship and reducing the carbon footprint associated with large-scale manufacturing and transportation.

Our Process
1. Consultation
The first step in the creation of customised furniture involves a consultation with the client to discuss their vision and preferences. At Patience and Gough, one of our experienced designers will discuss your ideas with you and look at the aesthetics and practicalities of what you want. It’s at this stage that considerations like budget will be determined.
2. Materials and Product Sourcing
As part of the bespoke furniture design process, a wider spectrum of finishes and materials are available. Elevate your piece further by handpicking from a selection of suitable materials. We’ll work with you to ensure these materials fulfil your aesthetic and performance requirements, confirming your product looks, feels and performs exactly as required.
3. Concept and Proposal
Once the initial consultation is complete and the materials have been selected, we will create a furniture design proposal. At this stage, we’ll provide detailed sketches of the furniture as well as a breakdown of the materials and construction methods that will be used. This allows you to see what the piece will look like to ensure it’s exactly what you want.
4. Bespoke Furniture Design and Build
When the design proposal has been approved the team will begin construction of the custom-made item. We experiment with form, materials and techniques and collaborate with renowned artisans from around the world to bring your vision to life. Every detail is carefully considered, ensuring that each project is fully tailored and shaped around your desires.
5. A Beautiful Final Result
After all the details are finalised, we’re ready to deliver a piece of furniture that is not only visually breathtaking but also deeply personal. The unveiling of a completed piece of custom furniture is always a moment we look forward to. From carefully curated materials and colours to the precision of seamlessly integrated storage solutions, every detail is executed to perfection.
Furniture Design Case Study: Ferrari 12 Cilindri Desk

In our latest furniture design project, we crafted a commission piece uniquely tailored to the client’s needs and preferences made with the highest quality materials and construction methods.
Inspired by the powerful aesthetic of the Ferrari 12 Cilindri, this bespoke desk has a strong and sleek presence. Clad in dark green figured sycamore, sharp angles echo the delta-wing rear of the hardtop edition, while the Ferrari’s distinct interior is mirrored using supple Italian leather.
At the press of a button, a concealed 27-inch monitor glides smoothly from the rear compartment. Subtle details elevate the experience; a precision-inlaid Ferrari clock, discreet pen storage and a concealed keyboard tray. This stunning desk is a tribute to a beautifully engineered vehicle.
