The Importance of Scale in Textile Design

Our Bay View Project is an Arts & Crafts bedroom where proportion, materiality and scale were carefully considered throughout.

Working closely with our clients, we refined the palette for the room, from wallpaper and paint colours through to textiles, ultimately selecting our Tora “Pistachio” Velvet for its softness, depth and playful feel. Alongside this, we designed and commissioned a bespoke headboard with a dark-stained oak frame, and completed the scheme with made-to-measure curtains and a blind.

Scale is one of the most powerful tools in textile design. The same pattern, when offered at different scales, can perform very different roles within a space. Our patterns are available in three sizes: Small, Medium and Large, allowing them to shift from detail to backdrop with ease.

The Importance of scale in textile design and how, in interior design, this scale plays a crucial role in how patterns, textures and materials are perceived within a space. In this room, a smaller scale introduces texture and intimacy at the headboard, drawing the eye closer and adding quiet interest. At the window, the larger scale allows the pattern to open up and breathe, responding to the light and framing the architecture rather than competing with it.
