Lighting Your Way to Luxury: Bert Frank

Designing an interior without a lighting specialist is like planting a tree and expecting it to thrive without sunlight. To have one without the other is unthinkable and, well, impossible.

Patience and Gough partner with luxury lighting designer Bert Frank, to elevate both aesthetic appeal and functionality of the high-end living spaces we create. Their contemporary designs inspired by classical traditions seamlessly blend beauty and function, enhancing visual appeal and shaping the ambiance and mood of the rooms they are displayed in.

Founded by Adam Yeats and Robbie Llewellyn in 2013, Bert Frank’s award-winning lights are designed and made in the UK. Their workshop is proudly located in Birmingham, the home of British engineering since Victorian times, and despite the use of cutting edge, computer-aided machinery, Bert Frank lamps very much remain ‘hand-made’ items.

Driven by a desire for beautiful objects and a passion for lifestyle-enhancing design, Adam and Robbie’s partnership has resulted in award-winning lighting and accessories that fuse the integrity of the small-scale workshop with timeless aesthetics reimagined for today. This blog post aims to shine a light on our partnership with the talented artisans at Bert Frank.

Bert Frank Design Philosophy and Craftmanship

Bert Frank’s philosophy – things only make us happy when they combine beauty with utility – resonates deeply with our own design values. Their work is a testament to the belief that aesthetics and function are not opposing forces, but essential partners. Each piece is designed to enhance everyday life not only through visual impact but also through practical use, creating objects that are as purposeful as they are inspiring.

This philosophy is brought to life through Bert Frank’s thoughtful craftmanship, evidenced in every Bert Frank lamp and wall light. The lustre of hand-finished brass, the silky movement of hinges, the seamlessness of joints, each intricately knurled thumb nut and elegant finial reveals craft of the highest order. Their attention to detail ensures each piece feels intentional and enduring. It’s this level of care and skill that makes their designs not only beautiful but truly timeless, and why they integrate so effortlessly into our interiors.

Why Bert Frank Complements Luxury Interiors

Lighting is a fundamental element of interior design because, as well as illuminating a room, it can completely transform the look of interior spaces. When executed correctly, lighting design will take a space from ordinary to opulent with the flick of a switch (literally.)

Using lighting as a decorative element in a home is a highly effective way to accentuate the main features of a room and enhance the entire space. Lighting works alongside decorative aspects to bring drama, add interest, and transform the atmosphere of the space. As well as decorative lighting, architectural lighting, which encompasses a combination of concealed lighting placed within the architecture or joinery, is also important. A good lighting designer will combine both for the best results.

In keeping with their philosophy, Berk Frank lighting blends functionality and aesthetics with innovation and is tailored to enhance the ambiance and character of high-end spaces. Each Bert Frank lighting piece is not only striking in design, but also thoughtfully engineered to serve its purpose effortlessly. A deep commitment to craftmanship is evident in every design which is honed to perfection, every detail carefully considered.

Bert Frank and Patience and Gough at Clerkenwell Design Week

Patience and Gough have collaborated with Bert Frank on many different shows including our Chelsea Harbour Launch and the Salone Del Mobile show in Milan. Now At this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week, we brought our refined aesthetic to the heart of Farringdon, hosted in the beautifully curated Bert Frank showroom. The collaboration between the two brands was a seamless meeting of form and function. Patience and Gough’s sculptural, contemporary furniture perfectly complemented Bert Frank’s bold, architectural lighting.

Guests were treated to a carefully curated showcase that featured standout pieces including our Shokunin Side Table and Totem, as well as the UK debut of our collaboration with Ukrainian design house NOOM. Upholstered in our signature fabrics, NOOM’s Gropius, Archipen, and the striking Hello Chair made a lasting impression on visitors.

Throughout the week, the synergy between the two collections was undeniable, with many remarking on how naturally the designs worked together. In addition to our work, the Bert Frank team highlighted some of their most iconic pieces, including the versatile Colt Pendant. The installation will remain in the Bert Frank showroom for the coming months, so we encourage you to drop in and pay the wonderful team a visit.
