The Koshi pattern is a dance of movement and restraint.
Diagonal strips sweep across the surface, their ends soft and curved — echoing the fluidity of brushstrokes in Japanese calligraphy. Figured veneers sit beside those of straight grain, creating a quiet dialogue between chaos and control.
Threading through the composition, fine metal inlays flow in and out of the timber like ribbons of light — sometimes revealed, sometimes hidden — giving the impression that the woods and metals are interwoven rather than applied. The result is a surface alive with rhythm and reflection, one that shifts with every change in angle and illumination.
New Koshi Finish
Wine Cabinet
Japanese for “interlaced”
A study in connection and contrast.
The Koshi finish takes its name from the Japanese word meaning interlaced — a fitting expression for a design that weaves together texture, tone, and technique. Inspired by the latticed façades of Kyoto townhouses and the quiet geometry of traditional joinery, each surface is a composition of layered veneers and inlaid metalwork — black and grey woods intersected by ribbons of brass, nickel, or copper.
The result is a finish that feels architectural yet fluid; a visual rhythm that shifts subtly with the light. Each line speaks of balance — between strength and delicacy, shadow and sheen, tradition and innovation.
Available in both Light and Dark Koshi versions, the palette can be tailored to suit its setting: cool silvers for a refined urban mood, or warm brass tones for depth and intimacy. Every piece is made to order, each intersection laid by hand — an ode to the Shokunin spirit of craftsmanship that defines our work.

Our latest collaboration with Bert Frank brought the new Koshi Bar Cabinet to life on their breathtaking stand at Decorex 2025, designed by the talented British interior designer Brian Woulfe.
Set beneath Bert Frank’s newest chandelier — a sculptural statement in brass and alabaster — the Koshi Bar Cabinet took on a quiet radiance, its interlaced veneers and flowing metalwork echoing the rhythm of the lighting above. The result was a seamless conversation between materials: light and shadow, metal and wood, tradition and modernity.
A true celebration of British design, artistry, and collaboration.
Individual by Design
Thoughtful craftsmanship isn’t just about what’s made, it’s about who it’s made for. It’s about capturing your story in every detail, creating furniture that feels at home with who you are, not just what you own.
At Patience & Gough, individuality is at the heart of our
design philosophy. Every piece begins with a conversation, shaped by your vision and refined by our expertise. It might be a subtle shift in finishes, colours, or patterns to suit your space. It could mean working with materials and techniques that resonate with your aesthetic or weaving in personal motifs and inlays that tell your story. By approaching each project through a unique lens, we uncover unexpected ways to express your perspective, ensuring that what we create doesn’t just exist in your space, but belongs there.
